Warming the hearts of others during the holidays
The holiday season is a time for giving, it means something different for each of us and for a lot of us it means giving to the charities of our choice. As you know right now we are collecting food for Feed Nova Scotia, as well as making a donation. So, in keeping with the spirit of giving, I decided to highlight a few local charities in our community and Nova Scotia.
The mission of the Nova Scotia SPCA is to prevent abuse, neglect and cruelty to animals, and provide for province-wide leadership on matters that promote and improve the welfare of all animals through animal protection; care and rehabilitation; humane education; advocacy and engagement and collaboration with stakeholders.
The Ecology Action Center strives to build a healthier, sustainable Nova Scotia. Founded in 1971, they work closely social and natural scientists making use of science and communicating their message to the public. Their projects include recycling, composting, and energy conservation. Their current areas of focus include, Built Environment, Marine, Environmental, and Coastal Issues, Food and Transportation.
The mission of the YWCA Halifax is to build our community by engaging and supporting women of all ages to participate fully in life, both as individuals and as valued members of their communities. We provide programs and services for women and young women at critical turning points in their lives, and we are a strong voice for equality and for women. YWCA Halifax believes in supporting women with responsive programming that advances and enhances the quality of their lives during all stages of life; creating an inclusive environment where women can develop to their potential; and advocating for equal opportunity, equity, and freedom to make choices.
Children's Wish Foundation of Canada
Children's Wish Foundation is a national non profit organization fulfilling the wishes of children diagnosed with life threatening illnesses. They have granted over 17,000 wishes for children and their families. Each wish is as unique as the child and their wish meets their needs, it could be a personal computer, a home theatre system or meeting with a celebrity.
Since its beginning in 1987 Phoenix has been offering at risk and homeless youth between the ages of 12-24 the opportunity to break the cycle of homelessness and find their way from the streets. They have a variety of programs and services addressing the individual needs of each client providing support and allowing them to make positive changes in their lives.
The Halifax chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving was founded in 1995. They provide education for the public about the dangers of impaired driving and also provide services for victims.
The Youth Project provides support and services to youth 25 and under dealing with issues of sexual orientation and gender identity. They provide a wide range or programs and services that include counseling, educational workshops, a resource library, support groups and social activities to name a few.
