How to properly work at your computer


There are a lot of people that work at computers day in and day out and if your computer is not properly set up correctly, it can eventually lead to health problems. I have learned a few tips on how you can set up and sit correctly at your work station.

  • If you have to spend hours at your computer it is IMPORTANT  to have a proper chair. (The chair will probably be the most expensive item to buy besides your computer) It is important to get a chair with a high back instead of a short one, you also want to choose a chair that will fit your posture well. While sitting, make sure your elbows, hips and knees are at a 90 degree angle. You should also ensure that the chair is at the proper height. Your shoulders should be relaxed and your fett should be flat on the floor or on a foot rest. Adjust your chair accordingly based on these rules.
  • Your monitor should be postioned in a way that you have proper view of it, making sure that there is no strain on your neck. It should be perfectly at eye level and you should be at least 18 to 24 inches from your monitor.
  • The final step is your keyboard. This must be positioned low, almost in your lap. Keep your arms and shoulders relaxed. You should rest your forearms on a work surface or pad and at a corrected angle.

Before starting your day make a plan of the work load to avoid feeling “swamped”. Develop a stress reduction and relaxations techniques, which works for you before you start your day and during your day.

During your day it is very important to remember to take frequent breaks. Take short 1-2 minutes stretch breaks every 20-30 minutes. To prevent eye fatigue, rest your eyes by covering them with the palm of your hands for 10-15 seconds. Always try to get away from your computer during lunch breaks. You don’t want to get into the habit of eating at you computer. IT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA.
